What is Virtual Shifting and why is it important?
Virtual Shifting is a new technology that allows you to adjust the resistance of your smart trainer without mechanical gears. Instead of shifting with a derailleur and cassette, you use buttons or controllers. Tacx NEO The smart trainer then simulates the feeling of switching.
For indoor cyclists, this means less maintenance, more flexibility in bike choice and a quieter training experience.
What are the benefits of the Garmin/Tacx solution?
Garmin and Tacx distinguish themselves with an advanced implementation of Virtual Shifting. The following features stand out:
Tactile feedback with every switch (unique in the market)
24 virtual gears from light (30x40T) to heavy (55x10T)
Efficient power range: gears 4 to 10 active instead of 14 to 16
Race Mode with 10Hz data throughput for faster response in e-races
Extremely quiet operation, ideal for training in an apartment or early in the morning
Compatibility with Zwift Ride frame (for NEO 2T)
Which smart trainers is the update available for?
Virtual Shifting is available for the following models:
Tacx NEO 2 (2018)
Tacx NEO 2T (2019 to 2022)
Tacx NEO 3M (2023)
Note: The original NEO 2 has a different freehub. Specific tools such as a chain whip and lockring tool are required for use with the Zwift Cog. The NEO 3M will not fit on the Zwift Ride frame due to its wider housing.

My first impression: is it really an improvement?
After a day of testing, the experience is completely positive. The tactile feedback feels intuitive and significantly increases the realism. The quietness of the setup is striking and ideal for early training sessions with kids who are still sleep.
The range of 24 virtual gears is more than sufficient for a variety of situations, from recovery training to sprint intervals.
