Zwift

Zwift is an online platform where cyclists and cyclists can train and race virtually. It is designed to enhance indoor training through interaction and social aspects. Using a special bike trainer or roller trainer, which is connected to a computer or smartphone, the user can train in a realistic way.

You cycle in a digital environment called Watopia, but you can also choose routes in London or, for example, a virtual version of the Alpe D'huez.

I have been training with Zwift for over 1,5 years now and since October 2022 I have been using Zwift in combination with Join.

Zwift offers a number of virtual routes, including well-known mountain climbs such as the Alpe D'Huez and Mont Ventoux. It is also possible to race against other users from all over the world. This makes indoor training not only more effective, but also more fun and challenging.

How does Zwift work?

To use Zwift, you will need a bike trainer or roller trainer that is compatible with the platform. You will also need a computer, smartphone or tablet to use the platform.

My own indoor setup consists of my old Bulls Harrier 2, Tacx Flux S Smart T2900S equipped with the Shimano 105 5700 10 Speed, and an iPad Air 2022.

Outside I ride a Canyon Endurace CF SL 7 eTAP.

Finally, you will need to pair your bike trainer or roller trainer with your computer or smartphone so that it can measure resistance and speed. You can then log into the Zwift app or website and choose one of the available virtual routes.

As you ride, Zwift will track your progress and provide you with real-time feedback. This could include your current speed, power or heartbeat.

Zwift Routes

Zwift offers a large number of virtual routes, including well-known mountain climbs such as Alpe D'Huez and Mont Ventoux. There are also several flat routes available, such as Watopia, a virtual island created especially for Zwift.

Both routes can be found in Zwift under the name VenTop (Ventoux) and Road To the Sky (Alpe D'Huez).

For each route you can choose different levels of difficulty, depending on your own condition and goals. In addition, you can also choose the VERY fashion, so you always cycle at the right wattage according to your training schedule.

You can always get off early, but you don't do that, right?

Zwift essentials

To use Zwift, you need a few things:

  • Bicycle trainer or roller trainer
  • Computer, smartphone or tablet
  • Bike
  • Heart rate monitor (optional, but recommended for accurate measurement of your heart rate)

It is important to choose a bike trainer or roller trainer that is compatible with Zwift. There are trainers that can connect directly to the platform via Bluetooth or ANT+. It is also advisable to choose a trainer with a high resistance, so that you can do a realistic and challenging training.

Also, don't forget to attach your bike to the bike trainer properly, so you can train comfortably and safely. Make sure you have the right tire pressure and that your bike is properly adjusted.

Finally, it is also recommended to use a heart rate monitor during your Zwift training. This way you can accurately track your performance and train more specifically to improve your FTP increase.

Zwift and Tacx

One of the most popular brands for bike trainers and roller trainers that are compatible with Zwift is Tacx. Tacx offers a large number of trainers that can connect directly to Zwift, so you can start your training right away.

One of the advantages of Tacx trainers is that they often have a high resistance, which means that you can do a realistic and challenging training. In addition, they are also often compatible with other training apps, such as Join, which means you have even more options for your indoor training.

All in all, Zwift is a great choice for cyclists and riders looking for an effective and fun way to train indoors. Whether you’re looking to increase your FTP or just want to have a fun workout on one of the virtual routes, Zwift has something for everyone.

Improve your cycling experience and chat with other users through the Zwift Companion app.
